Overview:
In this position, you will develop, test, and implement innovative packaging solutions that are cost effective to address company objectives and customer requirements. In addition, you will serve to support the Strategic Sourcing group in evaluating, qualifying, testing, and recommending vendors for Smithfield Farmland. The role provides leadership and support in teh following areas: cost savings and new product development; quality enhancements; and support.

Responsibilities:
80% Cost Savings & New Product Development:
Support multi-functional groups with packaging expertise by providing savings analysis, justification, and testing of: packaging materials (pallets, corrugated, folding cartons, film, bags, labels, tapes, strapping, etc); ppackaging labor, increased productivity, improved yields; and packaging automation, plant layouts, pallet patterns, box erectors, form/fill/seal, code dating, etc.;
Perform line trails and develop technical analysis to qualify new packaging materials and improve existing ones;
Using CAPE software to identify and recommend pallet patterns that optimize shipping and storage efficiencies;
Establishes die lines on flexible materials that will be used for artwork placement and product sizing;
Determine performance characteristics on flexible materials that will protect the packaged product;
Established dimensions on corrugated materials that will contain product packs and set parameters for printing;
Determine design and strength requirements of corrugated materials for defined use; and
Work with a broad range of suppliers to identify, develop, and test new packaging materials that will improve efficiencies and package performance.
10% Quality Improvements:
Cross functional work with business management, quality, and production to increase packaging performance and reduce customer complaint related to packaging materials;
Participate in Focus Groups to gain consumer insight on perception and use of packaging materials;
Continue to identify, recommend and put in place changes that reduce waste in our production processes; and
Work within Quality Guidelines of GMP, HAACP, Food Safety and plant best practices.
10% Technical Support:
Provide packaging material and packaging machinery technical support to customers, sales, purchasing, production, quality control, and management;
Manage Walmart Sustainabiliity Scorecard for packaging materials;
Make formal presentations to mid and upper management;
Create and present packaging concepts (including samples for management review); and
Interact with customers to create new packaging concepts and improve on existing ones.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) from a four year college or university in Engineering, with Packaging Science/ Engineering preferred;

years related progressive experience in in manufacturing operations and packaging techniques;
Knowledge of packaging materials (pallets, corrugated, folding cartons, film, bags, labels, tapes, strapping;
Knowledge of packaging processes;
General understanding of how materials and equipment interact;
Computer skills (Microsoft applications, SAP, AutoCAD, CAPE, Pack/TOPS
Critical behavioral skills (strong oral/written communication skills, analytical and problem solving skills, solution oriented, tactfully persuasive, muti-task oriented, leadership/independent working abilities, initiative)
Physical Demands:
Stand/walk for long periods of time
Lifting up to 50lbs
Travel time between 60%-80%
Work Environment:
Work in production areas with loud noises and cold environments with a large time spent walking and standing.
